Corrugated Metal: Advantages & Drawbacks

Corrugated metal panels are rippled metal sheets that are used primarily for roofing, flooring, decking and siding. Corrugated metal is light weight, tough, practical and weather resistant.

Corrugate metal panels even are used for construction full-metal buildings. They become more popular as people realize that by purchasing pre-formed kits thy can save their money. Also they are easy to maintain, you don’t to have deal with rotten wood or insects and they’re fire resistant.

Corrugated metal roofing.

Corrugated metal roofing refers to roofing systems made of aluminum, copper, steel, stainless steel, and zinc alloys. Their properties vary largely in terms of price, appearance and durability. It's easy to make roof leak repair by changing defected metal panel.

Materials.

Steel is the most common corrugated metal material. It is heavier and sturdier then aluminum. Because of it’s durable coating and finish, like stainless steel it does not rust or corrode. But stainless steel roofing is a very expensive roofing solution. Aluminum is most commonly used in residential metal roofs. Aluminum roofs do not rust even if they are not coated, but for better appearance, they are generally coated or painted. They are extremely lightweight and inexpensive. Copper metal roofs can be very expensive, but they have such advantages as good rust or corrode protection and very easy installation. Alloys have nice durability and strength but it is they are also a pricey solution.

Advantages of corrugated metal roofing.

First of all, they are highly durable and easily last 20 to 50 years. They are in the highest fire rating resistant category – class A. Metal roofing is also highly resistant to rot, insects and mildew. They can easily shed snow and withstand high winds and heavy rains. Corrugated metal roofs are lightweight – about 50-150 pounds per square. Corrugated metal roofing insulation preserves energy as the insulation materials inhibit the flow of energy which influences heat loss or gain of the structure. Installing corrugated metal roofing straightforward and inexpensive, easy and fast.

Drawbacks.

The price is high. It may cost you about $150 to $600 per square. However, the high cost minimizes the requirement for maintenance or repair work. Probably, you won’t even need to replace your roof again in your lifetime – so, it is basically a one-time investment in your dream house. Another problem is the noise of rain falling on the roof. However, you can seriously reduce and even completely eliminate the noise with a little modification in roof construction - for example, using materials that have structural barriers.

Metal roofing and metal siding systems are the choice of building owners and architects since they provide a wide array of corrugated metal roofing design options. Corrugated metal roofing is a good choice of roofing material when used for the right application. It is cost effective, looks good and has an acceptable lifespan when used in most environments.
